Thinking about buying an Audi A4 2.0 T? Compare it to a BMW 128i first!

The BMW 128i Overview

The 1 Series positions BMW's product offerings into a market segment where BMW has not had a presence in recent years. The 1 Series puts BMW squarely into competition with some models that haven't been considered BMW competitors before, and gives BMW a more favorable price point against some that were. Here's a field of key competitors for the two 1 Series Coupe models; click on the model for a brief analysis of how BMW's new compact Coupes stack up against each of their key rivals.

The Audi A4 2.0 T Overview

Although a new-generation A4 series is already on sale in Europe, the old-generation models continue for now in the U.S., probably until fall '08. The 2.0T Sedan is currently the entry model, powered by VW's ubiquitous 2.0-liter, 200-hp turbo 4-cylinder. It begins at $29,675, remarkably $300 more than the much more stylish, dynamic, 6-cylinder 128i Coupe. $1,300 extra gets Audi's Multitronic continuously variable transmission (CVT), a concept that has theoretical advantages but seems strange to many drivers because in automatic operation, it never shifts. "quattro" all-wheel drive is available for a further $2,100, and the quattro version's automatic is a conventional 6-speed. For now, Audi continues with an old-tech sedan against BMW's brand-new, far more dynamic 128i Coupe.

BMW vs. Audi A4 2.0 T

What BMW offers…

  • Only front brakes are ventilated discs
  • No included maintenance
