Thinking about buying a Infiniti G37? Compare it to a BMW 328i first!

The BMW 328i Overview
The 2011 BMW 3 Series is in a league of its own. Compared to its own sedan counterparts, it has spent more time at the top of its class than any competitor. After winning multiple comparison tests and holding a place on Car and Driver's 10Best list for 19 consecutive years, BMW's Coupe is the standard of comparison for compact sport coupes.

The 328i has a 230-hp that has won comparisons against cars with significantly more power, simply by its incredible combination of balance, handling and luxury.

For those who prefer a more evenly matched comparison, the new 300-hp Twin Power Turbo inline-6 in the flagship 335i Coupe puts BMW's Coupe on equal footing with most of the competition in terms of raw power, which means the overall result tilts even more in BMW's favor. Simply put, in either rear-drive or xDrive configurations, the 328i and the more-powerful 335i remain the benchmarks in their class.

The Infiniti G37 Overview

Infiniti's approach to the compact sport coupe has been very consistent: provide a large amount of features and a sporting chassis, and season it with a large dollop of horsepower.

The G37 Coupe is the latest example of this thinking, sporting a normally aspirated 3.7-liter V-6 churning out 330 horsepower. Available as either rear- or all-wheel-drive, the current coupe checks in with a base price just under $37,000, and includes a 7-speed automatic with shift-paddles, leather seating, 18-inch wheels, 7-inch color display, 8-way power front seats, and keyless remote. The upscale Sport and Journey models add sport suspension, staggered-width 19-inch wheels, larger-diameter brakes with 4-piston front calipers and a viscous limited-slip differential. The Sport also offers the only 6-speed manual in the lineup.

For those who shop horsepower-per-dollar, Infiniti offers an appealing approach, with a laundry-list of features included in a reasonable base price. In the past, however, it's left the car with some rough edges in terms of driving feel and dynamics, which has garnered criticism in many road tests.

BMW vs. Infiniti

What BMW offers…

BMW places no restrictions on optional features, so even the base 328i can be equipped exactly
the way a customer prefers.

BMW's standard xenon headlamps include both active feature and Cornering lights for
improved night-time vision

BMW's long wheelbase, short overhangs and overall attention to design detail yields a weight
distribution near 50/50 in virtually every 328i configuration.

Moreover, in any configuration, the 328i is lighter by 200 to 240 lbs.

The 328i's 3.0-liter inline-6 is inherently smoother than Infiniti's large-displacement 3.7-liter
V-6, and has been praised for its smoothness and sophistication.

The 328i includes more rear head and shoulder room, and at 33.7 inches, almost 4 inches more
rear legroom.

The 328i Coupe also provides a significantly larger trunk – at 15.5 cu-ft, it's more than twice as
large.

BMW includes a 4-year/50,000-mile Full Maintenance Warranty

What Infiniti doesn’t…

Though reasonably equipped, the base G37 offers no options; any optional equipment requires a move up to the pricier Journey, Sport or awd G37x models.

Infiniti includes standard xenon headlamps, but they lack an active feature and don't include cornering lights.

Despite its "front-midship" design, the G37 is significantly more nose-heavy, with a weight distribution that varies from 54/46 to 56/44.

At 3627 lbs, the rear-drive G37 weighs more than the all-wheel-drive 328i xDrive.

The G37's V-6 design has never been able to match BMW's overall sophistication, and its lack of smoothness has garnered complaints in multiple road tests.

The Infiniti's interior space is much more limited at the rear, and includes only 29.8 inches of legroom.

Likewise, the Infiniti has a tiny trunk, with only 7.4 cu-ft of storage.

Infiniti includes only a standard, no maintenance warranty, with no free maintenance.
