Thinking about buying a Audi A4? Compare it to a BMW 328i first!

The BMW 328i Overview
BMW's 3 Series isn't merely the best-selling member of the compact-luxury class, it's the best-selling luxury car in the world. The reason is simple: The 3 Series defines its class like no other vehicle. In fact one could argue that the entire compact sport-luxury class owes its existence to BMW's 3 Series.

And a quick look at the current examples illustrates why. The current range of 328i and 335i Sedans and Sports Wagons, both rear-drive and xDrive all-wheel-drive, seamlessly balance performance, efficiency, handling, luxury and practicality in an uncanny blend, often leaving their competition lacking in most, if not all, of those categories. These BMWs succeed in both expected and unexpected ways, often setting standards at both ends of the design spectrum.

The Audi A4 Overview

Audi's A4 has been a perennial 3 Series competitor that offered several of BMW's traditional advantages: European quality, German engineering and a distinctly upscale feel. Audi's basic design, however, has often hampered the cars dynamically due to the cars' basic front-drive design and resulting severe front weight bias. That's particularly true with the A4, which in the past often shared components with the similarly sized VW Golf and Jetta.

All-new A4 received a thorough overhaul, including attractively styled exterior, 2-inch longer (110.6-inch) wheelbase and a 5-inch increase in length. The A4's base engine, a 211-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter, inline-4 with direct fuel injection, is also all-new.

Standard equipment on the $32,700 A4 includes 17-inch wheels, automatic climate control and leather seating surfaces. Options include 18- or 19-inch wheels, an S-Line dress-up package, and DVD-based navigation. As in the past, the base 4-cylinder cars have a limited options list, and several features such as Drive Select, Adaptive Cruise Control, and parking assist are not available on these cars.

BMW vs. Audi

What BMW offers…

BMW's 328i includes a longer list of standard equipment, including Adaptive xenon headlights and LED turn signals, sport suspension, rear center armrest, moonroof, and split-folding rear seats.

The 328i Coupe provides a choice of 6-speed manual or auto, with either rear-drive or xDrive all-wheel-drive.

BMW's Twin Power Turbo 3.0-liter inline-6 holds an advantage in every performance category, with 300 horsepower and a 300 lb-ft of torque and a torque spread that reaches from 1200-5000 rpm. BMW's inline-6 is also inherently smoother than Mercedes 3.5-liter V-6.

The 328i posts far better 0-60 mph times: 5.3/5.5 seconds (man/auto) for the 328i or 5.2/5.3 for the xDrive.

In every configuration, the 328i weighs less than the E350 – by as much as 210 lbs in the case of the rear-drive 328i with 6-speed manual.

BMW also includes larger brakes to counter the 328i's higher performance: 13.7-inch front / 13.2-inch rear.

BMW includes a 4-year/50,000-mile Full Maintenance Warranty

What Audi doesn’t…

Audi's traditional front-drive design still compromises overall handling and ride.

The base A4 offers front-wheel-drive and CVT; a 6-speed manual is available on 4-cylinder models only.

Though significantly improved with this new model, the A4's front-to-rear weight distribution is still 55/45.

Audi's turbocharged inline-4 or V-6 can't match BMW's inline-6 for smoothness.

The FWD A4's 211-hp have to haul 3527 pounds; with Audi's quattro and Tiptronic, the A4's weight rises to 3715.

Audi claims the A4 2.0 makes 0-60 in 6.7 seconds with its 6-speed Tiptronic, but the CVT is likely significantly slower.

Audi's new navigation still uses a DVD-based system, with no RTTI, no search capability, no CD-ripping capability and only a 7-inch monitor.
