Thinking about buying a Audi S4? Compare it to a BMW 335i first!

The BMW 335i Overview
The 2011 BMW 3 Series is in a league of its own. Compared to its own sedan counterparts, it has spent more time at the top of its class than any competitor. After winning multiple comparison tests and holding a place on Car and Driver's 10Best list for 19 consecutive years, BMW's Coupe is the standard of comparison for compact sport coupes.

The new 300-hp Twin Power Turbo inline-6 in the flagship 335i Coupe puts BMW's Coupe on equal footing with most of the competition in terms of raw power, which means the overall result tilts even more in BMW's favor. Simply put, in either rear-drive or xDrive configurations, the 328i and the more-powerful 335i remain the benchmarks in their class.

The Audi S4 Overview
This year, Audi introduced a reworked version, this time with its 4.2-liter V-8 replaced by a supercharged V-6. Like BMW's M3, Audi's S4 cuts across traditional competitive lines, and the 4-door sport sedan is often seen as a competitor to both coupes and sedans alike. A recent test by Car and Driver placed both BMW 335i and Audi S4cars shared billing on that magazine's 10Best list in the past (though the 3 Series has been on it 19 consecutive years).

A supercharged, direct-injected 3.0-liter V-6 drives the current S4, putting out a healthy 333 horsepower. Power goes to all four wheels via Audi's quattro system, either through a 6-speed manual or 7-speed S-tronic automatic. Audi's optional Sport Rear Differential dynamically apportions torque to either rear wheel, (similar to BMW's Dynamic Performance Control) eliminating any complaints of understeer from the base S4. Standard equipment also includes 18-inch wheels.

With an entry price of $46,725, the S4 offers Premium Plus and Prestige versions. S4 specific options include a Silk Nappa Leather, and Audi's Drive Select Package, adds driver-selectable chassis tuning, and also adds the torque-vectoring differential.

BMW vs. Audi

What BMW offers…

BMW's 335i includes a longer list of standard equipment, including Adaptive xenon headlights and LED turn signals, sport suspension, rear center armrest, moonroof, and split-folding rear seats.

The 335i Coupe provides a choice of 6-speed manual or auto, with either rear-drive or xDrive all-wheel-drive.

BMW's Twin Power Turbo 3.0-liter inline-6 holds an advantage in every performance category, with 300 horsepower and a 300 lb-ft of torque and a torque spread that reaches from 1200-5000 rpm. BMW's inline-6 is also inherently smoother than Mercedes 3.5-liter V-6.

The 335i posts far better 0-60 mph times: 5.3/5.5 seconds (man/auto) for the 335i or 5.2/5.3 for the xDrive.

In every configuration, the 335i weighs less than the E350 – by as much as 210 lbs in the case of the rear-drive 335i with 6-speed manual.

BMW also includes larger brakes to counter the 335i's higher performance: 13.7-inch front / 13.2-inch rear.

BMW includes a 4-year/50,000-mile Full Maintenance Warranty

What Audi doesn’t…

Audi's S4 offers only the company's Quattro all-wheel-drive system as the only available drive system.

Though significantly improved from Audi's past models, the S4's front-to-rear weight bias is still 55/45. And even with the move to a V-6 engine, the S4 still weighs 3924 lbs with its S-tronic gearbox.

Audi's supercharged V-6 can't match BMW's inline-6 for smoothness, it's been consistently criticized for its off-key exhaust note.

Audi offers a similar 18-inch standard/19-inch optional tire choice, but they are same size tires and wheels front to rear.

The S4's V-6 posts some impressive numbers, but its 325 lb-ft of torque trails the BMW during acceleration.

The S4's tronic gearbox includes automated shifting, but has no Launch Control feature.

Despite its praiseworthy handling, several tests have complained about the S4's "artificial" steering feel.

Audi offers the same warranty period, but includes no maintenance.
