Thinking about buying a Cadillac CTS? Compare it to a BMW 335i first!

The BMW 335i Overview
BMW's 3 Series isn't merely the best-selling member of the compact-luxury class, it's the best-selling luxury car in the world. The reason is simple: The 3 Series defines its class like no other vehicle. In fact one could argue that the entire compact sport-luxury class owes its existence to BMW's 3 Series.

And a quick look at the current examples illustrates why. The current range of 328i and 335i Sedans and Sports Wagons, both rear-drive and xDrive all-wheel-drive, seamlessly balance performance, efficiency, handling, luxury and practicality in an uncanny blend, often leaving their competition lacking in most, if not all, of those categories. These BMWs succeed in both expected and unexpected ways, often setting standards at both ends of the design spectrum.

The Cadillac CTS Overview

It's difficult to overestimate the impact the CTS had on Cadillac's fortunes, since the compact sedan virtually reestablished the division's credentials, redefining it as a viable frontline sportluxury car maker. A new CTS hit the streets for 2008, thought it's difficult at a glance to tell the sharpedged sedan from its predecessor. The new model also added an AWD variant. Both offer a new 6speed automatic or 6speed manual.

The car's classification as a "compact," however, refers to its interior dimensions. With a 113.4inch wheelbase, 191.6inch overall length and 3874lb curb weight, the CTS is actually larger than BMW's 5 Series. A new 3.6liter V6 with direct fuel injection boosts the standard CTS from the previous 255 to 304 horsepower. Cadillac claims no loss in fuel efficiency despite the horsepower boost; EPA figures for 2009 3.6 DI automatic are 17 City/26 Highway.

Standard equipment on the 3.6 DI includes 17inch wheels, 8speaker Bose stereo with singledisc CD, dualzone climate control, 8way power driver's seat, leatherette interior, and OnStar. Optional equipment consists of several packages that add such items as leather seating surfaces, Bluetooth, 10way power seats with memory, Smart Remote Start, plus individual options such as harddrive navigation and 18inch wheels.

BMW vs. Cadillac

What BMW offers…

  • BMW's Twinturbo inline6 spins out nearly the same horsepower 300 vs. 304 for the Cadillac but notably more torque: 300 lbft compared to 273 for the CTS.
  • The 335i sprints from 0 to 60 mph in 5.4 seconds with manual transmission, 5.6 with automatic. The 335i xDrive is even quicker, 5.3 seconds manual, 5.4 automatic.
  • The 335i's Twinturbo inline6 is inherently smoother than Cadillac's V6, and provides 300 lbft of torque from 1400 to 5000 rpm.
  • BMW's harddrive based navigation adds voice actuation, Real Time Traffic Info, 2ndgeneration iDrive, CDripping, 8.2inch monitor, MyInfo and BMW Search.
  • BMW includes runflat tires on all 3 Series models.
  • Active Cruise Control, Smartphone Integration, 18inch staggered wheels, and iPod/USB adapter are all features not offered on the CTS.
  • BMW's 4 year/50,000mile Full Maintenance Warranty
  • 12 year/unlimited mile corrosion warranty

What Cadillac doesn’t…

  • Cadillac's 304 horsepower arrives at 6400 rpm, and its torque peak at 5200, so it not only makes less torque, but has a much narrower powerband as well.
  • Cadillac makes no claims about 060 times, but Car and Driver (February 2008) recorded a 6.1second 060 mph for a manual CTS, well behind any 335i model.
  • Road tests have complained about the CTS's coarse response; the same C/D test described "strange whooshing and droning sounds" on acceleration.
  • Cadillac's harddrive based navigation offers CDripping and voice actuation, but none of the other features, and its input is still touchscreen based.
  • The CTS includes only a tireinflation kit, no runflats.
  • 4 year/50,000mile only, no maintenance
  • 6 year/unlimitedmile corrosion warranty
