Thinking about buying a Lexus LS600h L? Compare it to a ActiveHybrid 750i first!

The ActiveHybrid 750i Overview

The first indication that BMW’s new hybrids take a different approach to efficiency and performance is in the name: ActiveHybrid. Conventional thinking about hybrids is that they are the automotive equivalent to sensible shoes: responsible, efficient, and a bit … boring. While BMW’s definition would certainly include the first two descriptions, the new ActiveHybrid 750i and 750Li set new performance standards not merely as hybrids, but as luxury cars.

With 450 horsepower backed by a whopping 515 lb-ft. of torque, these two luxury hybrids provide all the performance expected of a BMW flagship. With 0-60 mph acceleration in under 5 seconds, these twin-turbocharged sedans provide exactly the response, handling and performance people have come to expect from the Ultimate Driving Machines. The fact that they do so while providing up to 15 percent better mileage than their conventional counterparts underscores the responsible part of the definition.

And as BMWs they still provide the overall balance of handling, braking and engine performance that has always placed the 7 Series cars among the most desirable ultra-luxury automobiles in the world. Lavishly equipped, the long and short-wheelbase ActiveHybrid 750i and 750Li sedans include full Nappa leather interior, head-up display, active ventilated seating, Comfort Access, Soft Close doors, iDrive with navigation, 20-way adjustable front seats and 4-zone climate control. Available features include Surround View cameras, Rear Entertainment System, Active Blind Spot Detection and Lane Departure Warning. All in all, these are likely the most sumptuously equipped hybrids in the world. The fact that they also provide an ecologically sensible side makes them just that much more impressive.

The Lexus LS600h L Overview

Though updated for the 2010 model year, the LS600h L is the oldest hybrid design in the luxury field, introduced as a 2008 model. The LS600h was intended as a competitor to the 6.0-liter V-12 flagship models available at the time, hence the “600” designation. The hybrid LS is actually powered by a 5.0-liter V-8 driving through a continuously variable transmission that offers eight preselected “ratios” driving all four wheels. A pair of 288-volt motors provide electric power. With 438 combined horsepower, the LS manages a 5.5-second 0-60 time – a respectable performance at its introduction, but well off BMW’s figure.

It’s also the only full hybrid in the class, with the ability to run exclusively on electric power for short distances. Though cutting edge at its intro, the overall design of the LS hybrid shows how rapidly this technology has developed, as the car’s older generation nickel-metal-hydride (NiMH) batteries demonstrate. The LS’s bulky trunk-mounted battery pack takes a large bite from the car’s cargo volume, and partially accounts for the car’s 5203-lb curb weight.

Constructed on the long-wheelbase (202.8-inch) LS chassis, the $109,675 Lexus’ flagship is lavishly equipped. Navigation, Bluetooth™, heated steering wheel, rear sunshade, back-up camera, climate-controlled front and heated rear seats, air suspension, and a host of minor touches are all standard the LS600h L. The LS also offers several rear passenger options, such as massaging rear right seat and a single-screen entertainment package as part of the $10,835 Executive Class Seating Package. Additional packages add such features as active cruise control, pedestrian detection and active anti-roll bars.

BMW vs. Lexus

What BMW offers…

  • The ActiveHybrid 750Li’s design combines a twin-turbocharged V-8 and 120-volt electric motor with a state-of-the-art lithium-ion battery pack.
  • With its lighter lithium-ion batteries, the 4825-lb 750Li weighs almost 500 lbs less than the LS600h L.
  • In addition, the BMW’s less-bulky battery pack doesn’t compromise cargo volume; at 13.0 cu-ft, the 750Li’s trunk is almost 30 percent larger than the LS’s.
  • BMW’s twin-turbo V-8 ActiveHybrid also produces more power: 455 hp and a whopping 515 lb-ft of torque.
  • The ActiveHybrid 750Li is also quicker to 0-60 mph, at 4.8 seconds.
  • Despite its performance advantage, the ActiveHybrid 750Li’s preliminary EPA ratings are 17 City and 26 Highway – only 1 mpg less in the City and a remarkable 4 mpg more on the Highway!
  • The 750Li front seats are 20-way adjustable, with standard heat and available Active Ventilation.
  • BMW includes larger disc brakes: 14.7-inch front with 14.5-inch rear, for sure, drama-free stopping.
  • Standard suspension on the 750Li includes Adaptive Drive, which combines Active Roll Stabilization with four-position driver-selectable suspension settings and load-compensating self-leveling air springs.
  • BMW’s 4-zone Climate Control is standard on the ActiveHybrid 750Li.
  • BMW’s Night Vision with Pedestrian Detection is available as a reasonably priced stand-alone option.
  • Side View Camera uses two wide-angle cameras ahead of the front wheels to give an accurate view of traffic on busy cross streets.

What Lexus doesn’t…

  • With its older technology, the LS600h L features a normally aspirated V-8 and nickel-metal-hydride batteries, which are bulkier and heavier than lithium-ion.
  • The older design partially accounts for the LS’s weight; at 5320 lbs it weighs significantly more than the BMW.
  • Its trunk-mounted NiMH batteries take up more room than BMW’s lithium-ion type. As a result, the LS600h has a much smaller trunk than the 750Li, only 10.1 cu-ft.
  • With its normally aspirated 5.0-liter V-8 as a basis, the Lexus produces only 438 hp and 385 lb-ft of torque.
  • The full-hybrid LS requires 5.5 seconds to reach 60 mph.
  • Though theoretically more efficient, the LS’s full-hybrid design provides only a better EPA City rating – 20 mpg – but its 22 mpg Highway rating trails BMW’s 750Li significantly.
  • The LS600h L has only 16-way driver’s and 12-way passenger’s seats as standard.
  • The LS600L’s disc brakes are smaller, with 14.1-inch fronts paired with 13.2-inch rear.
  • The LS’s standard Adaptive Variable Air Suspension offers only three alternative settings, and its optional Active Power Stabilizer system is part of a $3000 package.
  • On the Lexus LS600h, 4-zone climate control is part of a $5800 rear seat upgrade package.
  • The LS’s Active Pedestrian Detection is only available as part of a $5800 package.
  • Lexus offers a side view camera only on its latest full-size SUV, the LX570, but offers nothing like it on the LS600h L Sedan.
